Abstract
Esters of aromatic carboxylic acids are prepared by reacting the vapour of a lower aliphatic alcohol with a slurry or a dispersion of a high-melting aromatic carboxylic acid characterized by a solubility in alcohol not exceeding 10 per cent by weight at room temperature in an inert high-boiling slurry or dispersion medium at a temperature above the boiling point of the esterifying alcohol and substantially below that of the final ester. The esterifying alcohol may be introduced as a vapour, or as a liquid and vaporized in situ. The acid may be mono- or polycarboxylic, the temperature is usually between 80 DEG and 200 DEG C., and the slurry medium is preferably an ester, e.g. the crude esterification product, but it may be a hydrocarbon, e.g. white oil. An esterification catalyst may be used. In the examples (1-3) the methyl esters of iso- and terephthalic acids and their mixtures are prepared.
