Abstract
305,308. Arnold, C., (Standard Oil Development Co). Nov. 21, 1927. Esters, particularly those of secondary alcohols such as isobutyl alcohol and propyl methyl carbinol, are made in the presence of a solvent for the ester, which is capable of separating it from the reaction mixture, the ester being then separated from its solvent by distillation. The esterification constituents are used in suitable proportions, preferably with an excess of one, and the process may be effected continuously. In an example; the reaction mixture consists of isobutyl alcohol, glacial acetic acid, and sulphuric acid, and a refined white petroleum oil of 300‹ C. boiling point and 28.5‹ BÚ is used as the solvent for the ester, the reaction being effected at 50‹-60‹ C. The acetate of propyl methyl carbinol is similarly produced, and it is stated that other alocohols and acids including polyhydroxy compounds may be employed.
