Abstract
330,921. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). March 14, 1929. Fatty acids, purifying.-A process for isolating fatty acids from the oxidation products of waxes, e.g. paraffin, carnauba or beeswax, formed by the action of gaseous or gasifiable oxidizing agents consists in treating said oxidation products with concentrated acetic acid, preferably while heating, and, after cooling and separating the upper layer of unsaponifiable material containing esters &c.. recovering the fatty acids from the acetic acid solution by cooling or by removing the acetic acid by distillation. For example, the oxidation products of paraffin wax are dissolved in glacial acetic acid at 60‹ C. The solution is then cooled to a temperature not below 15‹ C. to separate the unsaponifiable material, and the resulting acetic acid solution of fatty acids is distilled in vacuo. When concentrated acetic acid is used without heating, the acidic constituents only are extracted.
