Abstract

Phthalic anhydride formed by the catalytic oxidation of naphthalene is purified by heating it to a temperature above its melting point with an organic reagent of high boiling point which is either acidic or forms an acidic compound in presence of the molten phthalic anhydride, and subsequently separating the phthalic anhydride from the mixture by distillation or sublimation. The acid &c. reagents preferably boil above 170 DEG while retaining or developing their acidic character above that temperature, and include lactic, saccharic, mucic, stearic, tartaric, citric, phthalic, abietic and sebacic acids, and alcohols of high boiling point, e.g. glycerol, which form acid esters in presence of molten phthalic anhydride. An example of the use of lactic acid is given.
