Abstract
Succinyl chloride and o-dicarboxylic acid chlorides of the benzene series are made by treating the corresponding acid anhydrides with thionyl chloride at a temperature above the melting point of the anhydride. The reaction may be effected by adding thionyl chloride slowly to the fused anhydride at atmospheric pressure or, less advantageously, by heating a mixture of the anhydride and thionyl chloride under pressure. A metal salt of acid reaction, e.g. zinc chloride or aluminium chloride, may be present as a catalyst. An example is given in which phthalyl chloride is prepared by adding thionyl chloride slowly to fused phthalic anhydride maintained at 200--240 DEG C. and containing a little zinc chloride. Reference is made also to the production of chlorophthalyl chloride.
