Abstract
Alkyl chlorides are obtained by bringing a vapour mixture consisting of one molecular proportion of an alcohol of not more than three carbon atoms and at least one molecular proportion of hydrogen chloride into contact with an aqueous solution of a metal chloride catalyst such as zinc chloride or ferric chloride, at a temperature high enough to effect the reaction and drive off continuously the water formed, so that the water content of the solution remains substantially constant and the solution maintains its liquid phase at ordinary temperatures. The vapour mixture, preferably containing excess of hydrogen chloride, may be produced by heating dilute sulphuric acid with sodium chloride and alcohol. The vapours pass to a second reaction vessel containing the metal chloride solution, preferably maintained at a temperature of from about 110 to 150 DEG C. The vapours leaving the second vessel are washed with water and concentrated sulphuric acid to free them from hydrogen chloride and ether, and are then condensed. An example is given.
