Abstract

516,688. Vinylacetylene. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. July 4, 1938, No. 19806. Convention date, July 2, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] Vinylacetylene is prepared by polymerizing acetylene in the presence of a liquid mass of catalyst comprising water saturated or nearly saturated with ammonium chloride and cuprous chloride in the molar ratio.of 1.7-2.2:1, and not containing more than about 0.6 per cent. of. hydrogen chloride by weight. The concentration of the salts may slightly exceed saturation so that some solid phase is present. Metallic copper equivalent to about 4 per cent. by weight of the catalyst may be present, or copper paddles may be used in the reactor.- With such a catalyst the ratio of vinylacetylene to byproducts, mainly divinylacetylene, does not vary with the temperature and higher reaction temperatures, e.g., 50-75‹C., may be used. Specification 451,442 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection includes the description of a catalyst consisting of 36-38, per cent. cuprous chloride, 19-21 per cent. of ammonium chloride, and 41-45 per cent. water. It also does not specifically limit the hydrochloric acid concentration in the catalyst to 0.6 per cent. up to 5 per cent. or more being referred to. Preferably the hydrochloric acid is added to the catalyst and the pH suddenly drops from about 4 or 5 to less than 1. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
