Abstract
Formic acid is produced by the reaction of carbon monoxide on water or steam in presence of an acid or acid substance and of a substance capable of absorbing carbon monoxide such as cuprous chloride or silver nitrate. Suitable acid substances are lower fatty acids such as acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, chromic acid and tungstic acid. The reaction may be effected by passing a mixture of carbon monoxide and steam through the acid or its solution containing cuprous chloride or the like. Carbon monoxide may be used without steam when the catalyst contains water, and acid vapour such as hydrochloric acid may be added to the gas. Alternatively a mixture of carbon monoxide, steam and acetic or hydrochloric acid may be passed through a reaction zone containing cuprous chloride or the like, which may be supported on a carrier such as pumice kieselguhr or carborundum. In another modification the reaction mixture may be passed over solid tungstic or chromic acid mixed with cuprous chloride or the like, and these substances may be supported on carriers. The carbon monoxide may be pure or dilute, and may be free from sulphur compounds. In an example a mixture of equal volumes of carbon monoxide and steam is passed through anhydrous acetic acid containing cuprous chloride at 220 DEG C. and 15 atmospheres pressure.
