Abstract
1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetrahydronaphthalene-1-peroxide is obtained by treating tetrahydronaphthalene with a gas containing oxygen either in the absence of a catalyst at a temperature below 100 DEG or in presence of a catalyst, below 60 DEG . Suitable catalysts specified are tin, lead, or lead oxide. The product may be crystallised out. According to examples, tetra-hydronaphthalene is treated with oxygen or air at ordinary temperature, with air in presence of tin filings, and with air, followed by separation of the product by distillation, precipitation with petroleum ether, or separation of the sodium salt with caustic soda, and addition of acid to free the peroxide.
