Abstract

Tribromoethylalcohol is prepared by treating tribromoacetaldehyde with alkyl compounds of aluminium or aluminium halogenides in the presence of an indifferent organic solvent and decomposing the condensation product formed by means of water, preferably acidified by a mineral acid. In an example solutions of tribromoacetaldehyde and aluminium triethyletherate in ether are mixed, ethylene being evolved, the resulting mixture is heated and sulphuric acid is added to give a solution from which tribromoethyl alcohol is obtained. Tribromoacetaldehyde may also react with diethylaluminium iodide or ethylaluminium diiodide in which cases the ethereal solution of the tribromoethylalcohol is washed with aqueous sodium thiosulphate to remove any dissolved iodine.
