Abstract
Coeroxenes and coerbioxenes are obtained by reducing coeroxonols or coeroxenols with reactive hydrogen in an alkaline medium until the resulting compounds are practically insoluble in alkalies. Reducing agents, which develop nascent hydrogen specified are aluminium, zinc, tin, or lead in caustic alkaline or ammoniacal solutions. Organic solvents, such as alcohol or acetone, may be added. In examples, the following compounds are reduced with zinc dust and alkali: (1) 4.14-dimethylcoeroxonol or coeroxonol; (3) 14.20-dimethylcoer-bioxenediol-(9.10); (4) 4.14-di-tert.-butylcoeroxonol; (5) 3.13-(or 3.15-) dimethylcoeroxonol or a mixture of 3.13- and 4.14-dimethyl - coeroxonol (obtained from crude meta - cresol); (6) 3.4.13.14 - tetramethylcoeroxonol; (7) 3.13 - dimethyl - 2.16 - dichlor-coeroxonol or a mixture of dimethyl-dichlor-coeroxonols (obtained by chlorinating crude cresol, condensing with phthalic anhydride and ring closure by means of oleum); (9) 4.14 (or 3.13-) dichlor-coeroxonol. In examples 1 and 9, aluminium powder may be substituted for zinc; in examples 2 and 8, 4.14-dimethylcoeroxonol is reduced electrolytically. 14.20 - Dimethyl - coer - bioxenediol - (9.10) is obtained by condensing 1 : 5-di-p-methylphenoxyanthraquinone with sulphuric and phosphoric acids, and treating the product with water and alkali. 4.14-Di-tert.-butyl-coeroxonol is obtained by condensing phthalic anhydride with 1-hydroxy-4-tert.-butylbenzene in presence of sulphuric acid and treating the resulting 3.6-di-tert.-butyl-fluorane with oleum. 4.14- and 3.13-dichlor-coeroxonol are obtained from 2.7- and 3.6-dichlor-fluorane respectively by ring closure with oleum.
