Abstract

Varnishes and like coating materials are manufactured by condensing a phenol with formalin at normal temperature and pressure in the presence of alkali for one to three weeks after which the mixture is neutralized with mineral acid and further addition of acid made, the neutralized liquid and the acid being preheated to about 40 DEG C., the condensation then being continued in the presence of acid at a raised temperature for about twenty minutes, the product quickly cooled, e.g. by introducing it into ice water, pulverized, washed, dried, and dissolved in a solvent. Previous to the actual coating operation an acid is added to the solution. In an example, phenol is condensed with formalin using caustic soda in the first stage and hydrochloric acid in the second. The product is dissolved in a mixture of equal quantities of ethyl and butyl alcohols, the concentration of the solution being 40 per cent, and before being applied to a surface the varnish is acidified with alcoholic hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. Cresols are also specified as starting materials.
