Abstract
322,253. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 7, 1928. Alkylbenzanthrones are obtained by treating with alkaline saponifying agents the condensation products made by the process described in Specification 319,593 from benzanthrones having free 2-positions and ketones of the general formula R<1>.CO.CH2.R, where R' is a hydrocarbon radicle, which may be substituted, and R is hydrogen or an alkyl group. Suitable alkaline saponifying agents are aqueous or alcoholic caustic alkalies, and calcium and barium hydroxides. The preparation of the condensation products and the alkaline saponification may be carried out in one operation. In examples, (1) 2-acetonylbenzanthrone is boiled with aqueous caustic soda solution or with anhydrous sodium sulphide; (2) methylbenzanthrone is obtained; (2) the condensation product from benzanthrone and acetophenone is boiled with alcoholic potash to yield 2-methylbenzanthrone; (3) 2-methylbenzanthrone is obtained directly by introducing acetone in an atmosphere of nitrogen into a mixture of benzanthrone, caustic potash and monochlorbenzene, diluting the mixture with alcohol, and boiling, and (4) benzanthrone, caustic potash, and pyridine are treated with di-n-propylketone in an atmosphere of nitrogen, the reaction mass is poured into dilute hydrochloric acid, and the brown resin which separates is dissolved in alcoholic potash and the solution boiled; 2-n-propylbenzanthrone is obtained.
