Abstract
263,311. Gammay, H. Jan. 7, 1926. Camphene is produced by the action of an excess of hydroxides or carbonates of the alkali oralkaline earth metals upon pinene hydrochloride with the addition of phenol in the proportion of more than five molecules of hydroxide &c. to one of phenol, the process being carried out with heat and under substantial pressure whilst stirring. The phenol may be replaced by other phenolic bodies or organic acids or their salts. Examples are given in which pinene hydrochloride is acted upon by caustic soda and one of the following, phenol, a- or #-naphthol, sodium acetate, stearic- or oleic acid, resin acid.
