Abstract
1-Phenyl-2.3.dimethyl-4-dimethylamino-5-pyrazolone is prepared by treating with formaldehyde, in presence of formic acid, 1-phenyl 2-3-dimethyl-4-sulphamino-5-pyrazolone, which may be obtained by treating antipyrin with nitrous acid and reducing the resulting nitrosobody with sodium bisulphite. According to an example, the sulphamino compound is stirred into a boiling mixture of formaldehyde and formic acid and the heating continued until carbon dioxide ceases to be evolved. The required compound is then extracted with benzene and caustic soda lye.
