Abstract

By the treatment of mixtures of o- and p-toluidine with a limited quantity of sulphur dioxide, preferably in the presence of a little water, a solid compound of p-toluidine and sulphur dioxide, with or without water, is formed and is separated from the residual liquor by filtration and pressing. The solid compound is decomposed by moderate heating preferably under reduced pressure giving practically pure p-toluidine. The residue after the separation of the solid p-toluidine compound is similar in composition to the commercial o-toluidine but also contains a little sulphur dioxide and may be worked up by distillation preferably under reduced pressure or by washing with alkali to give pure o-toluidine the residue may be mixed with sulphuric acid and steam distilled or to give the hydrochloride the residue may be treated with hydrochloric acid; in both these processes the liberated sulphur dioxide should be collected.
