Alcoholic liytids, distilling. - Simple and mixed ethers are prepared by a continuous process which consists in removing the water formed by the reaction of sulphuric or other acid and alcohols by adding a body such as gasolene or benzine, which forms an azeotropic mixture with water and distilling. The reaction mixture is heated in a boiler 1 and the vapours pass to Ó rectifying-column 3 to which a condenser 5 and dehydrating-apparatus 8 are connected. The ether is removed by a condenser 12 connected to the uppelr part of the column. In a modification for preparing higher ethers, the ethers are removed from the bottom of the column. In the case of butyl ether, for example, the products of reaction themselves form an azeotropic mixture with water.
