Abstract

Resins are prepared by condensing aldol, in the presence of secondary amines as condensing agents, while warming, and subjecting the resulting products to thermal treatment at 160--190 DEG C. Specified amines are dimethylamine, diethylamine, diethanolamine and methylethanolamine. According to an example, a mixture of aldol, water and a small amount of diethylamine is boiled under reflux for 4 hours. Water and other low boiling constituents are then distilled off, and the reaction mass is kept for 7 hours at 180 DEG C. and then, for a short time, at 190 DEG C. The last traces of water are then removed by vacuum. The resins are soluble in spirit and compatible with nitro-cellulose, and may be used in the preparation of polishes, and in the electrical industry as a shellac substitute, e.g. for impregnations or for sticking together mica.
