Abstract

Solid alcohol soaps of definite structure and of high melting point are produced by heating about 35-45 lb. of soap of about 5 per cent water content with about 50-60 lb. of alcohol of 96 per cent strength by volume in an autoclave to 80-150 DEG C. and a corresponding pressure of 1.5-10.0 atmospheres. The product may be mixed with ordinary structureless alcohol soaps to obtain pastes suitable for medical and pharmaceutical purposes. In an example 45 lb. of chipped soaps containing 5 per cent of water are heated with 55 lb. of alcohol to 120 DEG C. and a pressure of 6 atmospheres for 10-60 minutes with stirring or 1 1/2 hours without stirring. A soap having a melting point of 90 DEG C. is produced.
