Abstract

Glycerol and phthalic anhydride are condensed by heating and, at least during the latter part of the heating, under a reduced pressure in order to remove excess uncombined glycerol and phthalic anhydride. Vapours removed under vacuum may be separately condensed and the water condensed measured so as to give an indication of when the reaction is complete. In an example glycerol, phthalic anhydride and glyceryl monolinoleate are condensed and then heated under a pressure of not more than two inches of mercury to yield a product of low acid value. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 296,787, [Class 2 (iii)].
