Abstract
The constituents of an organic-inorganic addition compound having different constantboiling compositions at different pressures are separated by distillation under at least two different pressures. The acetic acid-boron fluoride complex obtained by reacting CO with methanol in the presence of BF3 may be distilled at subatmospheric pressure, e.g. 15-20 mm., until 10-15 per cent of the acetic acid distils leaving a constant-boiling mixture. Distillation is then continued at about atmospheric pressure, boron fluoride coming over until the original composition is attained. By repeating the cycle, complete separation is obtained. Addition compounds of other aliphatic acids, e.g. formic, propionic, butyric, isobutyric and higher acids, with boron-halogen compounds generally, may be similarly treated. Examples describe the treatment of the complex approximating to 2CH3COOH.BF3, distillation being effected alternately at 70 DEG C. and 15 mm., and at 150 DEG C. and 760 mm. or higher.ALSO:The constituents of an organic-inorganic addition compound having different constant boiling compositions at different pressures are separated by distillation under at least two different pressures.
