Abstract

Acetic and other aliphatic acids are concentrated by extracting with a solvent of low boiling-point such as ether, wholly or partly removing this solvent from the extract, and then adding an entraining agent and distilling so as to remove the water as an azeotropic mixture of lower boiling-point than the acid. Preferably the solvent for making the extract is one which does not form an azeotropic mixture with water. The extraction may be effected as a batch process or continuously in counter-current, and the removal of the solvent from the extract may be effected by the heat of condensation of the azeotropic mixture. The azeotropic distillation may be effected in any manner, and the entraining agent may be added in liquid or vapour form; entraining agent separating in the condenser may be returned for the removal of more water. Suitable entraining agents are benzene, ethylene dichloride, dichlorethylene, trichlorethylene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate and mixtures thereof. In an example, a 30 per cent acetic acid is extracted with ether, the ether is distilled off from the extract with utilization of the heat of condensation of the azeotropic mixture, and the partially concentrated acid is distilled with benzene to remove the water.
