Abstract

Bis(b -chloroethyl) formal is prepared by reacting together, in ethylene chloride, ethylene oxide and hydrochloric acid with cooling, treating the resultant mixture with formaldehyde and allowing reaction to occur and then removing the water, ethylene chloride and ethylene chlorohydrin from the reaction mixture by distillation. The formaldehyde may be introduced as a solution or as paraformaldehyde. The first fraction of the distillate, consisting of an ethylene chlorde-water azeotrope, may be separated and the ethylene chloride continuously returned to the still until all the water has been removed. The ethylene chlorohydrin and ethylene chloride distilled off may be used in the preparation of a further batch of the formal. Preferably an excess of hydrochloric acid and less than the stoichiometric amount of formaldehyde, based on the ethylene oxide, are used. The crude bis(b -chloroethyl) formal may be purified by vacuum distillation. Examples are given.
