Abstract

Methylene dicarboxylates of the formula R.CO.OCH2O.CO.R1, wherein R and R1 represent a C1- 17 alkyl group, or a mono- or bi-nuclear aryl group, or a cycloalkyl group, are made by a process comprising (i) heating an a -polyoxy-methylene with a stoichiometric equivalent of a monocarboxylic acid anhydride at 140-200 DEG C. in the presence of an acidic esterification catalyst, which is less volatile than the methylene dicarboxylate, to form a reaction mixture comprising a methylene dicarboxylate, a monocarboxylic acid and the anhydride thereof and the catalyst, (ii) distilling the mixture to obtain a distillate containing the dicarboxylate, the acid and the anhydride, (ii) fractionally distilling said mixture to obtain a product containing at 98% by weight of the dicarboxylate. Specified catalysts are H2SO4, H3PO4 and ZnCl2 which may be used in, e.g., amounts of 0.5-3.0% by weight of polyoxymethylene. The distillations may be effected at sub- or atmospheric pressures, preferably at 50-200 mm. absolute. Examples relate to methylene diacetate
