Abstract
509,762. Unsaturated acids. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd., and STAUDINGER, H. P. Nov. 25, 1938, No. 31. [Class 2 (iii)] Unsaturated acids such as crotonic acid are produced by the oxidation with air or oxygen of the corresponding aldehydes in the presence of an organic acid miscible with the aldehyde and of an organic peroxide such as benzoyl peroxide. The invention is described with reference to the oxidation of crotonaldehyde in the presence of acetic acid, but propionic and .butyric acids are also suitable and methacrylic acid may be made in a similar manner from methylacrolein. The crotonic acid may be separated from the reaction mixture by filtration or by distillation. In examples, (1) air is passed through glacial acetic acid containing some benzoyl peroxide, and the product is added to crotonaldehyde, air being passed through the mixture at 25‹C.; the crystals of crotonic acid are separated by filtration or the excess crotonaldehyde and the acetic acid are removed by distillation under reduced pressure ; (2) a mixture of crotonaldehyde, acetic acid and benzoyl peroxide is fed down a packed column in counter-current with air.
