Abstract

Oleic acid containing poly-unsaturated fatty acids is purified therefrom by heating the oleic acid at an elevated temperature and pressure in an atmosphere of high humidity for a period of time sufficient to polymerize the polyunsaturated fatty acids and then separating the latter from the purified oleic acid. An atmosphere of steam or other moisture laden gas or a small amount of water mixed with the oleic acid may be used, particularly steam under a pressure ranging from 80 pounds per square inch to the pressure of saturated steam at the temperature used such as 300 pounds per square inch. A temperature of 260 DEG to 360 DEG C. is specified. Small amounts of polymerization catalysts may be used such as lead acetate. The purified oleic acid may be separated from the polymerized polyunsaturated acids by solvent separation or by distillation, particularly under reduced pressure.
