Abstract

Alcoholic glycerol solutions containing soaps and esters resulting from the alcoholysis of glycerides are purified by splitting the soaps into fatty acids and extracting the resulting fatty acids and the esters by means of a selective solvent therefor such as aliphatic hydrocarbons (e.g. gasoline) and halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons (e.g. trichlorethylene and carbon tetrachloride). The splitting of the soaps is preferably carried out by sulphuric acid. In cases where the alcoholic glycerol solution contains such a high proportion of soaps or esters as to cause the solvent to lose its selectivity, a proportion of the alcohol is evaporated after the solution has been treated with acid so as to increase the glycerol-alcohol ratio, whereby some of the esters and fatty acids become insoluble and settle out, after which the remainder of the esters and fatty acids are extracted by selective solvents as before. Specifications 587,523, 587,530, 587,532 and 587,533 are referred to.
