Abstract

3-Methyl-chromone is prepared by condensing an alkali metal phenate with an alpha, betadihalogenated isobutyric acid ester to form a phenoxy-methacrylic acid ester, liberating phenoxy-methacrylic acid therefrom, and cyclising the free acid with a mixture of acetic anhydride and sulphuric acid. Alpha, beta-dihalogenated isobutyric acid esters are prepared by dihalogenating, for example dibrominating, methacrylic acid esters.
