Abstract

In a process for the oxidation of hydrocarbon in the presence of a boron compound to give a reaction mixture containing boron esters of alcohols corresponding to the hydrocarbons which is hydrolysed to form an organic phase containing alcohols and an aqueous phase containing boric acid, a bleed stream of the aqueous phase is withdrawn and the remainder of the aqueous phase is circulated to the process. Alternatively, the aqueous phase may be extracted with a selective solvent to remove the impurities and the extracted aqueous phase is then returned to the process. Suitable solvents are, for example, alcohols, ketones, hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons or mixtures of these. Examples are given of the oxidation of cyclohexane to give cyclohexanol and some cyclohexamene.
