Abstract
Benzanthrone is prepared by treating benzanthrene with aqueous nitric acid. An inert solvent such as toluene, ligroin or nitrobenzene may be present. The benzanthrene used may be pure or may be admixed with other hydrocarbons, for example the mixture of benzanthrene and dihydrobenzanthrene obtained by the pyrolysis of a mixture of a - and b -benzylnaphthalenes (see Specification 409,770, [Group IV]). Examples illustrate the process of the invention. In an example in which a mixture of benzanthrene and dihydrobenzanthrene was used, the dihydrobenzanthrene was recovered unchanged at the end of the reaction.
