Abstract

Aminomethylene-malononitrile is prepared by reacting formamide with malononitrile in the presence of dimethyl sulphate. The reaction is preferably carried out in an inert solvent, e.g. hydrocarbons and ethers, at temperatures from about 40 DEG C. to 70 DEG C. using a molar ratio of formamide to both the dimethyl sulphate and the malononitrile of at least 2:1. The reaction mixture after the reaction has finished is preferably treated with ammonia. The ammonia can be added in any form; for example, a methanolic ammonia solution or pure liquid ammonia can be added. Alternatively, any solvents present are removed, the residue dissolved in another solvent and gaseous ammonia passed into the resulting solution.
