Abstract

In a process for the preparation of aliphatic o -aminonitriles with 3 or more carbon atoms by reacting an appropriate o -chloronitrile with ammonia, the aminonitrile is separated from ammonium chloride by treating the mixture, in the presence of free ammonia and at normal or elevated pressure, with an organic solvent which dissolves the aminonitrile but not ammonium chloride, and separating the solution of the aminonitrile in the solvent from the ammonium chloride and the free ammonia. The solvent may be an aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene or toluene, a chlorinated hydrocarbon such as methylene chloride, or a mixture of such solvents. The solvent may be added to the reaction mixture before or after relieving the pressure thereof, or the mixture may be added to the solvent under pressure. Examples prepare b -aminopropionitrile, d - aminovaleronitrile, o - aminoenanthonitrile, o -aminopelargononitrile, and o -aminonitriles with a mean carbon number of 15 and of 18.
