Abstract
Cyanogen chloride is extracted from a gaseous mixture of cyanogen chloride and hydrogen chloride, resulting from the vapour phase reaction of chlorine and hydrogen cyanide, by intimately contacting the mixture with benzene, toluene, a polymethyl benzene, or kerosene, or mixtures thereof. Polymethyl benzenes may be xylene or mesitylene, and reference is made to a mixture of m- and p-xylenes and ethyl benzene. The contacting may be countercurrent washing under pressure. The resulting solutions may be used for storing cyanogen chloride under pressure, in which case a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. tetrasodium pyrophosphate may be added, or may be passed to a description treatment from which cyanogen chloride is recovered and solvent is recycled to the washing.
