Abstract

Ethylene is recovered from gaseous mixtures also containing methane, acetylene and higher hydrocarbons by fractionating at superatmospheric pressure countercurrent to a reflux to remove all higher boiling hydrocarbons as liquid bottoms, cooling and compressing the overhead to obtain a condensate, using part of this condensate as the reflux to the fractionation zone, reducing the pressure on the remainder in a flash zone to obtain vapours which are contacted in countercurrent with a selective solvent to remove acetylene, ethylene being recovered overhead. Methane may be removed by stripping the condensate from the fractionation zone before flashing. The gas may be a pyrolysis effluent from which hydrogen, some methane and the C3+ hydrocarbons have been removed and preferably also carbon dioxide, water, tars and aromatics. Acetylene may be absorbed in anhydrous ammonia, acetone, dimethylformamide or butyrolactone and recovered.
