Abstract
Acetylene is obtained from pyrolysis gases by first removing carbon dioxide by means of ammoniacal solutions recovered in the process, and water vapour and aromatic hydrocarbons are removed by being condensed in heat exchange with the cold residual process gases or by being dissolved in a selective solvent previously cooled by the residual gases the solvent also removing the major part of acetylene homologues, wherein the residual gases are contacted with liquid ammonia in which the acetylene and its remaining homologues are dissolved, the ammoniacal solution is distilled under pressure giving a tail fraction containing acetylene homologues dissolved in ammonia, and a head fraction of acetylene and ammonia, this latter being recovered to separate pure acetylene. Ammonia may be recovered as such or as nitrate or sulphate. Specified solvents are methanol, acetone, dimethylformamide and butyrolactone.
