Abstract

Dichloroethane is prepared by reacting a dilute ethylene gas with chlorine in an iron reactor under pressure in a liquid dichloroethane containing a catalyst, the temperature being less than the boiling point of dichloroethane and being so controlled as to be able to withdraw the dichloroethane formed together with spent gas from the reactor as a vapour. The dilute ethylene gas is formed by the flame-cracking of petroleum naphtha, is treated to remove acetylene and hydrocarbons having more than 3 carbon atoms, and is then dehydrated prior to use in the process of the invention. Trichlorethane is obtained as a by-product in the example.
