Abstract
A normally gaseous olefin is polymerized at not above 100 DEG C and at a pressure not above 100 Kg. per sq. cm. in the presence of a liquid reaction medium using as catalyst a mixture of an aluminium monoalkyldihalide, a trivalent titanium compound and a tetravalent titanium compound in a mole ratio of 1:0,5 to 2:0,2 to 1 respectively. Ethylene is the specified olefin and aluminium monethyldichloride, titanium trichloride and tetrachloride specified catalyst components. Heavy gasoline, and a hydrogenated propylene tetramer as used as solvents. It is preferred that the catalyst contains 0,75 to 1,5 mols. of trivalent titanium compound per mol. of aluminium compound and that the aluminium compound is present in from 0,0001 to 0,01 (or better 0,0005 to 0,008) mol. per litre of the liquid reaction medium.
