Abstract

Alkyl aluminium complexes are synthesised by reacting ethylene with complex compounds of alkali metal azide, alkali metal cyanide and/or potassium fluoride with trialkyl aluminium compounds containing alkyl radicals having less than 5 carbon atoms. The resulting complexes may be subjected to a displacement reaction at elevated temperature by treatment with an olefin containing not more than 5 carbon atoms. The azide complexes are of formula MN3.xAlR3, where M is an alkali metal (preferably not lithium) and R is an alkyl radical, as described in Specification 933,490. Using cyanide complexes, the 1:1 molar sodium: potassium complexes are preferred. The potassium fluoride complexes are of formula KF.xAlR3 where x is from 1 to 2. Additional free trialkyl aluminium may be present during the reaction. The growth reaction may be carried out between pressures of 20 to 200 or more atmospheres of ethylene pressure. The temperature range may be 140 DEG to 200 DEG C. using cyanides, 170 DEG to 220 DEG C. using potassium fluoride and 90 DEG to 150 DEG C. using azide complexes. The reaction may be conducted in a helically wound reactor. Alkyl aluminium hydride complexes may be used for the growth reaction, being immediately converted to the tri-alkyl by the ethylene. The displacement reaction may be carried out between 200 DEG and 340 DEG C., preferably in an elongated helical reactor, and at pressures below 15 atmospheres. The preferred olefins are ethylene, propylene and butylene. Specifications 879,269, 888,352, 903,053, 908,032 and 916,714 are referred to.
