Abstract
939,824. Organoaluminium compounds. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. May 24, 1961 [Sept. 26, 1960], No. 18796/61. Addition to 932,539. Class 2(3). In a process for preparing compounds of formula R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP>A1 in which R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are C 2 to C m alkyl radicals and may be the same or different, and in which R<SP>1</SP> may be hydrogen, which process comprises reacting a trialkyl aluminium compound or an olefin, aluminium and hydrogen at elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure, the aluminium is replaced by an aluminium alloy containing a major proportion of aluminium and a minor and added proportion of at least one of the elements titanium, zirconium, niobium, vanadium, hafnium, scandium, and uranium : and where the compound to be produced is diethylaluminium hydride, the said alloy contains a minor proportion of at least one of the elements hafnium, scandium and uranium. The alloy may contain at least 98% by weight of aluminium and not more than 2% by weight of at least one of the said elements. The reaction is conducted at a temperature between 80‹ and 200‹C. and at a pressure of between 60 and 350 atmospheres. The mole ratio of aluminium to trialkylaluminium starting material is from 01:1 to to 10: 1 .
