Abstract

In the preparation of alkylaluminium compounds from aluminium or an alloy thereof with e.g. Fe, Ti or Si, the activating agent is an organometallic or organoboron compound bearing at least one alkoxy, aroxy, alkaroxy or aralkoxy group, the metal being mono-, di- or trivalent. Examples of activators, used in an amount of at least 0.01% by weight of the aluminium or alloy, are sodium ethoxide, lithium iso-propoxide, potassium phenoxide, n-butyl-di-n-butoxyboron and di-isobutyl-n-butoxyaluminium. The inactive aluminium or alloy is heated at 70-250 DEG C. directly with the activator, or preferably with a solution or suspension thereof in an inert liquid under an inert gas. The activated aluminium with or without separation from the activator or solution or suspension thereof, may be reacted with a trialkylaluminium compound or dialkyaluminium hydride containing 2 to 20 carbon atoms per alkyl radical, hydrogen and possibly an olefine by known methods at 100-200 DEG C. and under 100 atmospheres pressure of hydrogen. Alternatively, the activating agent, inactive aluminium or alloy and reactants may be charged to a single vessel and activation and reaction carried out at 100-200 DEG C.
