Abstract
1,047,311. Alkali metal borohydrides. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. Oct. 21, 1964 [Nov. 26, 1963; May 15, 1964], No. 42920/64. Heading C1A. An alkali metal (e.g. Na) borohydride is produced by heating a boron-oxygen compound with H 2 , an alkali metal and/or an alkali metal hydride and A1 or an Al alloy at 100-650 C. at 1-50 atmospheres. Boron-oxygen compounds may be an alkali metal borate mineral, an alkaline earth borate mineral, a borate, or a metallic oxide-boric oxide mixture, e.g. borax, kernite, boronatrocalcite, pandermite, colemanite, boracite, sodium o- or m-borate, or a higher borate. The Al may be finely divided i.e. have a particle size < 1 mm. diam. and the surface pretreated. The alloy may contain >50% Al, with Si, Mg, Ca, Cu, Zn, Mu, Fe, or Ni. An activating substance, e.g. alkali metal hydroxide, mercury, a copper compound, an organo-boron or organo-aluminium compound, may be present. The process may be carried out batchwise, when a mixture of the alkali metal borate, sodium and Al are heated with H 2 under pressure, maintained at the reaction temperature until no more H 2 is absorbed, or the borate added to the other reactants at 1-10 atmospheres, or continuously at 300-620 C., or as a continuous process in a mixing screw, when Al up to 100% excess is metered to the first part of the screw, optionally with part of the borate, then mixed with liquid alkali metal and heated to 450-620, and remaining borate added to the second part of the screw. Diluents, e.g. graphite, borate, Al, NeAlO 2 , or mixtures of NaAlO 2 and Al 2 O 3 , may be present. The product can be recovered by extraction with NH 3 or an alkyl amine, e.g. isopropylamine, or worked up by pouring it into water at 0-40 C., then filtered, and an alkaline earth metal chloride added e.g. CaCl 2 , SrCl 2 , BaCl 2 to precipitate by-products and impurities.
