Abstract

1316045 Boron nitride VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT ABRAZIVOV I SHLIFOVANIA 19 April 1971 [17 Aug. 1970] 24119/71 Heading C1A Cubic boron nitride monocrystals are prepared by reacting at elevated temperature and pressure material boron, nitrogen and an initiator wherein the material also contains hydrogen. The term "initiator" is defined as a compound assisting in the formation of cubic boron nitride but not present in its pure form in the final product. The hydrogen of the material may be in a compound which evolves hydrogen under the reaction conditions such as a metal hydride or an ammonium compound, and may be used in amount of from 2 to 12% by weight of the material. The source of boron and nitrogen may be hexagonal boron nitride.
