Abstract

1335909 Cubic boron nitride VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT ABRAZIVOV I SHLIFOVANIA 19 April 1971 [12 Oct 1970] 26259/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C4] Cubic boron nitride is prepared by subjecting hexagonal boron nitride to at least 1000‹ C. and 40 Kbar in the presence of at least one boride of an alkali and/or alkaline earth metal which is present in such a quantity as to increase the boron content in the reactants by at least 10%. Suitable borides are Hg or Be borides which may be present in such quantity as to increase the boron content by 20-55%. The reaction mixture may be preheated to at least 1000‹ C. and cooled before being subjected to the reaction conditions. An abrasive product of the process contains 90-98% cubic boron nitride, not more than 9% unhydrolysable borides, nitrides and free boron, and not more than 1% hexagonal boron nitride with at least 80% of the abrasive material in the form of grains of polycrystalline aggregates.
