Abstract

PURPOSE: A highly active catalyst for stereospecific polymerization of an α-olefin, comprising a specific solid component and an organic Al compound.
CONSTITUTION: A solid component (A) containing 0.05W0.5mmol per g of solid of OR' groups is obtained by adding to a solidfree liquid product prepared by reacting (a) an OR' group-containing Ti compound of formula I, wherein R' is 1W20C hydrocarbon group and X is in the range 0.5≤x≤4, with (b) an organic Al compound of formula II, wherein R2 is R1, x is a halogen and y is in the range: 0<y<3, at minus 30W100°C, in the presence of an ether compound such as diethyl ether or methyl n-propyl ether, (c) a titanium tetrahalide such as TiCl4 or TiBr4, heating the resulting mixture at 40W150°C, for 5minW100hr, and separating the solid produced. Then, the solid component (A) is combined with 0.1W50mol, per gatom of Ti of the component (A), of an Al compound of formula III, wherein R3 is R1, Y is a halogen and Z is in the range: 0<Z≤3, thereby to produce an olefin polymerization catalyst.
