Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high polymer useful as raw materials of synthetic fibers and rubber, etc., having high carbonate content, by polymerizing or copolymerizing a specific alkylene carbonate compound using a basic complex of a metallic halide as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An alkylene carbonate compound shown by the formula I (R1, R2, R3, and R4 are independently H, hydrocarbon, halogenated hydrocarbon, may form a ring group as a part of constituent), e.g., ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, vinylethylene carbonate, is polymerized using about 0.01W10mol% based on the alkylene carbonate of a basic complex of a metallic halide shown by the formula II (M is III or IV group metal; X is halogen atom; B is nitrogen-containing organic base; n is the valence of M; Y is 1W3) as a catalyst at a polymerization temperature of about 80W250°C, preferably about 100W180°C to give the desired high polymer.
