Abstract

Polypropylene is prepared by polymerizing propylene at atmospheric pressure in the presence of a catalyst obtained by mixing an aluminium trialkyl with a reducible compound of titanium wherein the molar ratio of aluminium to titanium is above 1 : 1 and less than 4 : 1, and of an inert liquid diluent. A mixture of aluminium triethyl and titanium tetrachloride is preferred. The aluminium trialkyl may be added incrementally during the reaction, preferably starting with a ratio of aluminium to titanium of at least 0.5:1. The inert liquid diluent is usually a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon.
