Abstract

Alkanes are dehydrogenated to alkenes and alkadienes in the presence of at least 2 mols. of steam per mol. of alkane over activated amorphous carbon at above 500 DEG C. Up to 15 mols. of steam may be used and temperatures up to 750 DEG C. using space velocities of 50-300 litres of gaseous alkane per litre of catalyst per hour. The carbon may be derived from peat charcoal, coconut shells, lignite coke, and treated with steam at 900 DEG C. or higher or may be carbon black. It is preferably treated with a mineral acid to remove mineral components. Alkanes of 3-9 carbon atoms may be treated, e.g. butane which is converted to butene and butadiene.
