Abstract

Allene, propyne and propene are obtained by the decomposition of isobutene at above 700 DEG C. for less than 1 second at substantially atmospheric pressure in the absence of a diluent. The process may be effected in pyrolysis tubes or coils of quartz or steel which may contain filler bodies, or in stoves containing brick checkerwork. A gaseous catalyst, e.g. azomethane, may be added. The effluent is quenched with water.
