Abstract
Olefines containing less than 10 carbon atoms are converted into higher olefines by heating to 400-700 DEG C. in presence of a small amount of free oxygen. The oxygen should not exceed 5 per cent and is preferably 0,5--1 per cent. The time of exposure to the high temperature is preferably less than 2 seconds. The process should be carried out in a vessel having a large ratio of volume to surface, e.g. in a tube of at least 1<11> diameter. The residual gases may be recirculated after a further addition of oxygen. The invention is particularly applicable to the treatment of ethylene and propylene and of industrial gas mixtures rich in these substances. The principal products are butylene, amylene, and hexylene.
