Abstract
Benzene hexachloride is obtained by the addition of chlorine to benzene in the presence of an oxidizing catalyst and of a very small amount of water. Suitable oxidizing catalysts mentioned include the oxides and oxyhalides of nitrogen. The amount of water used is of the order of the amount chlorine gas will carry when used direct from the electrolyzer. It is stated that in the process of the present invention the water acts as a fundamental catalyst. An apparatus is described and illustrated for carrying out the process which consists essentially of a vessel for producing benzene vapour, a reaction tower for receiving simultaneously the benzene vapours and a mixture of wet chlorine and the oxidizing catalyst, and a condenser for condensing the products of reaction, and a filter to remove the benzene hexachloride. It is preferred that the reaction should be carried out in the presence of diffuse light.
